To describe her as a treasure is due to various reasons. Beyond being just an actress, she is a thinker, director, fashion designer, culinary expert, and also conducts programs for children.
Lakshmi has directed 6 short films till now. When we went to see her, we got the opportunity to see 2 short films that ran to a minute each. Even in that short span, the films brought tears to our eyes and speak highly of Lakshmi's care towards social issues.
Lakshmi would like to direct a full length film in due course. In whatever film she acts in, she learns post production work. It is hard to believe that she is a mother of 4. It won't be surprising even if she gets offers for heroine roles. How did she get into the film field? The flashback answer is interesting.
"My husband works in the Gulf. I also lived in the Gulf from 1987 to 2005. I conducted many programs for women and children there and got a good name. I returned to India a few years back. After completing building our house in Coimbatore , I wondered what I could do next. I was inspired by short films and directed a few short films too.
Lokidas wanted to use my house for shooting 'Chakaramuthu' and introduced me in that film too. I was praised for my role as Devayani teacher and in Kerala, I'm still referred to as Devayani teacher! Following this, I acted in many Malayalam films. I got the offer to act as Vijay's mom in 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' but the dates unfortunately did not work out. I did the role of Sneha's mother in 'Pirivom Sandhippom.' Now I have earned a good name for my role in 'Poi Solla Porom.'"
What next?
"I'm doing a negavtive role in 'Eeram' produced by S Pictures. I'm also acting in 'Leelai' produced by Aascar Films."
Lakshmi is very clear that her call sheet is assured for films with weighty roles.
