Azhagar Malai
Downing quarters and telling matters is sprinkled generously with comedy and entertainment.
RK plays the character of a no-good boozer who seems to have no other work other than drinking. His bachelor brother Napoleon wants nothing better than to see his brother married off.
But why would anyone want to give their daughter in marriage to a drunk? Now the heroine makes her entry. Bhanu comes to stay with her friend to watch the festivities. She and RK meet and love is in the air. It soon leads to wedding but villain Lal and gang are determined to stop the marriage taking place by all means. Whether the RK - Bhanu marriage takes place or not, forms the rest of the racy story.
Comedy is the food, action is the side dish, love is the papad, the message is the water to wash down the film with. Director SP Rajkumar has created a commercial; feast in 'Azhagar Malai.'
More than the RK-Bhanu jodi, RK and Vadivelu make a super combination. They start with converting a tea stall bench into a bar and their rollicking comedy goes on till the end of the film, having the audience in splits.
RK sends a love letter to his sweetheart but discards Vadivelu half way and watches the fun, having the viewers squealing in laughter.
When RK lectures Bhanu about drunkards, he shows his aptitude for comedy. He also shows his action side now and then. If only he had prevented from getting Bhagyaraj to sing the duet with him, it would have been better.
We have seen enough elder brothers doting on their younger brothers, so Napoleon's character is not of special interest. Lal is his usual self. "Karugamani…" tuned by Ilayaraja is catchy.
'Azhagar Malai' is a comedy riot.
