Paiyya
Love on the highway!
Lingusamy has narrated a realistic story that takes us along on its journey.
Karthi (Siva) is a graduate out looking for a job. At the start of the film, Karthi spots Tamannah (Charulatha) at the bus stop. It is love at first sight for him. After that, he goes in his friend’s car to pick up his friend at the railway station. He sees Tamannah there again, but she thinks Karthi is a driver and wants to hire the car. Without a thought to his friend, Karthi agrees and along with Tamannah, the car goes from Bangalore to Mumbai.
During the journey, he hides his feelings of love and manages to drive the car to Mumbai with some monetary help from friends. During the journey, Tamannah tells him that she is not in favor of the wedding arrangements made for her by her father and that’s why she was going to her grandmother’s house in Mumbai.
On the way, Tamannah comes to know that her father’s henchmen are following her. She urges Karthi to drive faster but he responds by saying it is now his problem, not hers. As expected, he stops the car by the road side and bashes up the henchmen. With a small suspense, the film breaks for intermission.
In the second half, the car travels at a moderate speed. After escaping from the bad guys, the two of them reach Mumbai. In the meantime, Karthi tells her about his enemies in a flashback sequence. We are forced to believe this. Here, one is able to enjoy the action scenes of ‘Paiyya’ though one can detect shades of ‘Run’ here.
After dropping off Tamannah at her grandmother’s house and returning alone, as well as in his telephone interactions with his friends, Karthi has done a good job of acting. The hero and heroine meet again, the villains interfere, Karthi bashes them up and the pair reunites. In the last scene, despite being hurt with a big rod wielded by the villains, it is a bit far fetched to see Karthi still managing to roar asking if any more of the villains are out there to accost him.
Tamannah seems to be getting prettier by the day. She is quite free and glamourously unabashed in the song sequences. All songs by Yuvan Shankar Raja are wonderful, especially the feet tapping “thuli thuli,” “Adadaa adadaa” and “Suthudhey suthudhey.” Yuvan shines in the background score too. Madhi’s camera shows the NH in a beautiful light.
Brinda Sarathy’s dialogues ensure that one does not feel tedium at any part through Paiyya’s journey. There’s a touch a humour too now and then. Lingusamy has again given us an entertaining and enjoyable film.
‘Paiyya’ is an entertaining boy!
