Peranmai
This can be considered as a document drawn by Jananathan on forests. One can learn information on animal kingdom, for example: to identify animals from their foot prints and to calculate the distance of the elephant from the warmth of its dung.
Jayam Ravi is the instructor in training 5 N.C.C. girls in the forest. (Forest officer is his role). He got lost in the wilderness due to the ignorance of the students. It was discovered at that juncture that the forest is infiltrated by foreign forces. Their purpose is to destroy the satellite sent by India. In destroying the infiltrators along with the five girls, we get to know the first half of Jeyam Ravi's name.
Jananathan is unfailing in making you expect his unique ways of plotting and the message he wants to convey through the film. However, he has indulged in artificiality to stretch the film by an hour in the first half. Particularly, the activities of the girls do not add credit to Jananathan.
The claps that start at the confrontation of the infiltrators after the interval continue till the climax. The quality and the interest element in these scenes remind us of Western films. The director deserves appreciation in involving the girls in fight scenes instead of singing songs around trees. Jeyam Ravi has really worked hard. It is exciting to watch his tying a rope high above to kill the enemies. He has shown that he is ready to act half dressed if needed. Taking lessons on politics and economics at critical times is too much.
Exposing the intolerance of bureaucracy at the improvement of poor people and caste consciousness deserves a mention. His dialogue amounting to 'nakedness to me is very different' is special.
The scenes where the hero is having a nice time with the girls at the stream forgetting the fall of the jeep from the cliff could have been avoided.
Cinematographer Satheeshkumar, music director Vidyasagar and other technicians have lent a strong to the Director's efforts. The cinematographer's work certainly needs a mention. With a little more work 'Peranmai' could have made others envy the director.
