  Poi Solla Porom

'Poi Solla Porom' serves as proof that one does not need big names or big budgets to deliver a film of high standard.

Petrol costs Rs.2. American President meets Bin Laden. Jackfruit grows on coconut trees. With such atrocious lies roling with the titles, the film evokes our curiosity. The fast pace is maintained through out and makes for a beautiful screenplay.

Nedumudi Venu dreams of building his dream house with his hard earned money. He buys a vacant plot to realize his dream. When he starts construction only does he come to know that it is in Nasser's control.

Nedumudi Venu and his family try to take police and legal action but it is like a fish disappearing into a crocodile's mouth. Nasser cannot be antagonized. The land has to be recovered from the land mafia. Nasser's ex-man Bosky gives Venu's son Karthik an idea of what to do. The drama that Karthik and co put up make a fool out of Nasser and Nedumudi Venu's dream is ultimately realized.

The core of the story is about shady land deals by land mafia that affect middle income families. For putting across such a serious issue with a comic slant, one should first salute the screenplay and direction. On one hand, one feels anguished by the misdeeds, on the other one doubles up with laughter, thanks to a brilliant screenplay. This is not easily achieved by all directors and we hope director Vijay will continue to give us films of high quality.

If one were to rate the actors, the first place would go to Nasser. After 'Magalir Mattum,' it is in this film that Nasser has been given scope to show his talent. Wearing flashy shirts and loose trousers, being cunning and smart, yet getting duped, Nasser has portrayed his character brilliantly. His facial expressions when he goes to survey the land and his body language show clearly that Nasser is a past master at this.

Nazar, Mouli

After a long time, Karthik has given a great performance. When his family is affected, he becomes a lion to undo the wrongs in a well evolved heroic character. Nedumudi Venu as the strict father is realistic. In trying after a couple of drinks to show friendliness to his sons, or trying to control his anger in yoga class with a smile that reaches his lips only, Nedumudi Venu shows that he is indeed an award winning actor.

Om as Karthik's younger brother does quite well. The scene where he brings goons to control the atrocities and turns the house upside down is a scene stealer. Newcomer Piya as Karthik's love interest and Lakshmi as the youthful mother are sure to catch the eye of Kodambakkam. Theatre actor Mouli is roped in to pose as the industrialist in the drama staged against Nasser and is sure to send even a stone statue into splits. When he asks Nasser, "Are you a party or broker?" with controlled face but trembling legs, the audience roars with laughter.

When a fisheries land is shown falsely as his own, the officers land up there suddenly and Balaji's timing in shooing them out has everyone in splits.

Cinematographer Aravind Krishna, music composers Gopi Sundar and MG Sreekumar, editor Anthony have contributed in helping director Vijay present an enjoyable film.

On our part, if we were to tell lies, the film was bad…!!
