Vettayaadu Vilayadu
A mega star, big budget, celebrated director and talented technicians – they all find a place in this film. In spite of it, since there is dearth of interest, and what stands out is the indifference.
Deputy Commissioner Kamal known for his uprightness and courage and his superior Prakashraj are officers of high standing who share their personal feelings without regard to their official hierarchy.
For some reason, Prakashraj’s daughter gets murdered. Before the blood could dry, Prakashraj and his wife who go to New York are murdered there. This was also a calculated murder.
The police department is confused over this serial killing. Kamal goes to New York to investigate the murders. As Kamal unravels the connection between the murders in New York and the one in Tamilnadu, his investigation gets accelerated. That happens at the intermission.
With mounting expectations of revelations about the crime, we return from the canteen and sit on the edge of the seat. But it is only a disappointment till the climax. The motivation for the murders and parading the murderers all get revealed in such a way that it ends as a joke.
When the audience knows that two of the medical students who travel to New York are the murderers, the police department’s chase to apprehend them only prolongs the film.
The mistake in the screenplay is obvious when one wonders at the level of seriousness exhibited by the department in solving an international crime.
Kamal’s action brings out some miracles though the film looks as if assembled of holes. On the death of the sweetheart, lying by her side and crying the heart out is never seen before.
The whole auditorium goes in ovation in appreciation of Kamal who is dressed to kill in the police uniform and who performs to the T without any lapse throughout the film. Kamal out of uniform pursuing his romance is an experience to watch.
Jyotika is the Chennai girl whom Kamal meets in New York. She has a lot of dialogues and her acting is impressive too. She has just gone through the trauma of a divorce and has a child to support, but is yet tormented and unable to give an answer to Kamal who would like to become her husband and father to her child.
It is unfortunate that Kamalini has a couple of scenes with good dialogues and a romantic duet with Kamal, before she is done away with.
Of the two guys who act as the murderers, the one who clashes directly with Kamal stands out. But the endless flashbacks after accosting Kamal are a big yawn.
‘Paartha mudhal’ and ‘Vennilave’ are two of Harris Jayaraj’s songs that make pleasant hearing.
The different technology used in various scenes and their composition make Ravivarman’s cinematography a poem on celluloid. The scenes shot from the helicopter that are supposed to show America in a different angle, make one quite dizzy!
Director Gautham has concentrated more on making the film appear like a Hollywood blockbuster. If he had paid more attention to giving a base for the murders, and made the escape of the killers and their chase more thrilling, Gautham would have retained his reputation that made his earlier film ‘Kaaka Kaaka’ a success.
‘Vettaiyaadu Vilayadu’ is playful.
