Pongal releases - New Movies

The Pongal of 2009 saw the release of only four films – 1.’A,Aa,E’, 2.’Villu’, 3. ‘Kaadhalna summa illada’ and 4. ‘Padikkadhavan’. Similarly only four films will be released for Pongal 2010 also. They are: 1. ‘Aayirathil oruvan’, 2.’Kutty’, 3.’Nanayam’ and 4. ‘Porkalam’. The expectation was that many more films would be released. But four films that have a combined investment of Rs.55 crore will see the silver screen on Pongal day. However much Dhanush desired not to compete in the field with his ‘Kutty’ against his brother’s film that is 1001th film and wanted to postpone it, Gemini Film Circuit have refused.
Aayirathil oruvan
Director Selvaraghavan’s dream project starring Kaarthi that is coming after the super hit film ‘Paruthiveeran’. With a budget of Rs.32 crore next only to that of Rajini film the two-year long project has met with and managed innumerable hurdles till its release. The film has at least 1000 junior artists acting in most of the scenes.
After a long gap Parthiban has done a lead role. This is the only film among the Pongal releases that has created great expectations among the fans.

Kutty
This is the Dhanush’s film that is competing with his brother Selvaraghavan’s film that is 1001th film. ‘Kutty’ is the remake of the successful Telugu film ‘Arya’. This is the film in which Dhanush-Sreya pair has starred after their successful film ‘Thiruvilayadal’. Megna Naidu has done a kuthu song in the film. The central theme of the film is triangular love and Selvaragavan’s song in praise of one sided love finds place in it.

Nanayam
The film is directed by the debut director Shakthi S.Rajan. The screenplay of the film is written with bank robbery in the background. This is the first film where Sibiraj who has been acting as hero in films has turned into a villain and Prasanna who has been alternating between a villain and a hero in films turning into a hero are coming together.

Porkalam
This is the film that is made by a team of newcomers with a huge budget. That it is being released for Pongal day is noteworthy. This is the first film which is directed by Pandi Sarojkumar who hails from Andhra and who has done a film course in Thailand. This film will launch Kishore who has been doing small roles as a hero. Being a full fledged action thriller, it has no other action film released for Pongal.

Industry circles are wondering if the Pongal release films will reap profits or end up like those of 2009 Pongal releases. Fans are worried if they would get value for the ticket money they pay. Let us wait and see.
