''Arya' shooting at Vishakapatnam - a shooting visit '
By:
Palaniswamy
This time we visited the beautiful port town of Vishakapainam in Andhra Pradesh. When we arrived there at the Collector's office where Balasekaran was directing 'Arya' starring Madhavan, we found Madhavan feeding a piece of cake to Balasekaran. Celebrating his birthday, Balasekaran was fed a piece of cake that was larger than his mouth by Bhavana. Colourful crumbs fell on his white shirt and stuck to it.
Seeing this, Madhavan exclaimed "I gave a smaller piece to him, but Bhavana gave him a big piece. Let him not mistake me," and offered a much bigger piece to Balasekaran. His face and his clothes were full of icing and cake as the birthday celebrations got into a full swing. Once Balasekaran came back after cleaning up and changing his clothes, he started explaining the shot to Madhavan and Bhavana, and the unit got into the shooting mood.
Balasekaran shot the scene where Madhavan, a medical student, gets into problem with Bhavana. As the trouble got serious, Bhavana dares him by saying, "You don't know about me. Wait and watch..." Madhavan calmly retorts, "Go and get anyone. I will be here"
After that, stunt master Rocky Rajesh filmed the fight lead shots wherein the henchmen sent by Bhavana start searching for Madhavan. Arriving in more than 6 Tata Sumo cars, getting down with authority, demanding to know who Arya was with the college students and in the meantime Madhavan confronting them, were all shot by Rocky Rajesh.
Though it was a Collector's office, it looked like a college. Added to that the boards and notifications set up for shooting made us think that we were in a medical college campus. What added more weight was the 500 rich models who were commissioned to act as college students.
Director Balasekaran revealed interesting information. "This is actually a Collector's office complex. We are shooting here because they are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. I gather that there was a proposal pending for a long time to convert this into a medical college. When we started shooting, a rumour spread around that the Collector's office is being converted into a medical collage. On a day when we cancelled the shooting, they confirmed that it was only a rumour. Not stopping with that, they have now put up a big board stating "Collector's office."
Asked about the film, Balasekaran said that 'Arya' is about 'youthful tussle.' When we asked if it was an out and out love story, he denied and said it was 'action and love.' "I have shown action and love in a very different angle."
Balasekaran says 'Arya' was inspired by Che Guevara's poem that breeze can unsettle a calm tree. Madhavan leads a calm life till a girl storms into his life and the resulting incidents is the story of 'Arya.'
Balasekharan also spoke about how Bhavana became the heroine of 'Arya.' "According to the story, the heroine is an arrogant and headstrong...somewhat like a female rowdy. Bhavana has soft looks and we wondered if she would be able to pull off such a characterization. But she passed at the make-up test. At the shooting spot, we are 200% satisfied with her performance. In fact, we now feel no one but Bhavana could carry off such a role to perfection. After 'Arya,' Bhavana is sure to make waves in Tamil and Telugu films," compliments Balasekharan.
Balasekharan gave memorable Tamil films like 'Love Today' and 'Thulli Thirindha Kaalam' after which, he went to Telugu films and made films with Nagarjuna, Tarun and Suman. He is set for his second innings in his home ground with 'Arya.' He hit a century in his first. Would he settle for anything less in his second?!
