Gangsterism that is dominating many cinema subjects is slowly creeping into real life. It is common in Hindi cinema for gangsters to produce films with proxy names and threatening actors who refuse to give call sheets with death. Recently the shoot out that happened at producer Mahesh Bhatt's office in Mumbai shook Bollywood. Compared to that, gangsterism in Tamil cinema is limited. But it is to be remembered that it has now grown out of proportion.
When Ajith withdrew from 'Naan Kadavul,' there were several troubles. A prominent political newsweekly has compiled them and published it as an essay. This is what it has to say:
Thenappan, the producer of 'Naan Kadavul' had given Bala 13 ½ crore. Bala in turn has given Ajith 1 ½ crore as advance. When it was decided that Ajith was not acting in the film, Thenappan and Bala had called Ajith to Hotel Palmgrove for a discussion. When Ajith went there, there were some financiers along with the other two.
Ajith has agreed to return the advance he had taken for the film. But Bala had demanded that he was not able to do the film for producer A M Ratnam only due to Ajith and asked him to return that money too as damages. The financier who was with Bala spoke abusively to Ajith and attempted to hit him. After torturing Ajith for several hours, they have taken Ajith's signature for several crores in a promissory note.
This is the summary of the article that appeared in that newsweekly. The financier who is one of those reported as present belongs to Madurai. There are already many complaints against him for threatening the producers.
Director Balu Mahedra had added his grandson's name to the title of the film 'Adhu Oru Kanaakalam.' When the irate producer removed that name because of his grouse against Balu Mahendra, Bala and Seeman went to the producer asking for justice. Later the producer had lodged a complaint with the police accusing those two of having kidnapped him.
The dissenters of the Producers' Association had abruptly removed the President T G Thiagarajan because he was not cooperating with some proposals. When this was taken to the Court, the dissenters changed the route and threatened that the FEFSI union under the leadership of Vijayan will not cooperate for his movies and TV serials with the result T G Thiagarajan was forced to step down.
Actor Karthik had confessed publicly that gangster Veeramani who was shot dead in an encounter had threatened him on some money matters. People who are in the know say that the same Veeramani was reported to have threatened a young actor to act in his crony's film, otherwise his son will be killed and that the higher ups in the department had come to know about this, which was also a reason for the encounter killing.
Gangsterism in one way or other is unsettling Tamil cinema. Everyone's wish is that the Chief Minister should intervene and set matters right. Otherwise, like Bollywood, Tamil cinema may have to encounter guns instead of firecrackers.
The immediate question that arises in our mind is, what does the Nadigar Sangam President Vijayakanth has to say about these things?
Even without anyone asking him, he claims that he will remove corruption from Tamilnadu, he gives speech on Srilankan refugees and about not increasing the price of kerosene. But he is engaged in an area which is riddled with threats, black money and enforcements. But why has he not opened his mouth about these things and particularly about Ajith's incident? For all that, he happens to be President of Nadigar Sangam.
When he can't set right his own field, how will he change the fate of Tamilnadu?
It is a big joke!
