On the face of severe opposition from majority of the Christian world, the movie that is creating history at the box office is Sony Productions' 'The Da Vinci Code'. Most who have seen the film consider it a regular Hollywood film. But what is there in the movie that has received worldwide appreciation?
The same opposition and appreciation emerged when author Dan Brown released the book 'The Da Vinci Code.' The opposition is due to his point of view about Jesus Christ worshipped by the Christendom in contradiction to that of the Bible. This controversy was the reason for the book to sell more than 7 crore copies.
There have been debates over the ideas expressed in the Bible from the time it was written. The most important of them is the evolutionary theory propounded by the scientist Darwin! Being an ardent Christian, he started to prove that God made man out of clay. Finally what he discovered turned totally against the Bible. (Following this discovery, he came to be criticized by the Christian holy men.)
Similarly, Galileo the scientist who discovered the solar centric system that had the earth rotating around the sun was imprisoned and tortured by the Vatican holy men. Several years of imprisonment and torture spoiled his eye sight and drove him to a pathetic death. Well before that, Galileo retracted his discovery that went against the Bible, bowed before the holy men and publicly apologized.
(Before the advent of Galileo the belief as contained in the Bible was that all the planets including the Sun rotated around the Earth – the earth centric theory. It is yet another story that centuries after the death of Galileo, Vatican apologized for having tortured him and adopted the solar centric discovery.)
This apart, there have been efforts to search for the things and the graves mentioned in the Bible and to research about them. There is rumour current even today that author Victor Hugo and scientist Isaac Newton believed that Jesus Christ's heirs were alive and that efforts were made to look for them. The film released some time ago 'The last Temptation of Christ' portrayed Jesus Christ as a human being and had human feelings and was as severely condemned by Christians.
Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code' was written on the basis of such history, rumours and speculations. This thriller begins at the Louvre Museum where the curator Jacques is murdered. Before the death, Jacques writes a puzzle and mentions the name of Langdon. This naturally makes the police suspect the Harvard professor Robert Langdon. At this time, Sophie the granddaughter of the murdered Jacques, arrives to assist Langdon. She joins hands with Langdon and tries to solve the puzzle and save Landon.
The secret they are searching for is about the wine cup that Jesus Christ and his disciples used at the Last Supper. They discover that the Holy Grail did not mean the wine cup, but the lady disciple at the Last Supper. It is revealed that the lady in question is Mary Magdalene who was ordered to be stoned to death by the public as she was a prostitute and who was finally saved by Jesus Christ. Dan Brown based his conclusion on observing the Last Supper painting by Leonardo Da Vinci wherein the person sitting on the right side of Jesus was not a man but a female without facial hair and long hair on her head.
Jesus Christ got married to Mary Magdalene. They also had a female child named Sarah. Christ's progeny are still living in the world. Such things never to be found in the Bible are discovered by the Langdon-Sophie pair.
Sony Productions have produced the novel written by Dan Brown into the film 'The Da Vinci Code' directed by Ron Howard and featuring Tom Hanks in the role of Robert Langdon.
Vatican asked Christians the world over to boycott the film 'The Da Vinci Code' as it contained information in contradiction to the Bible and as it stigmatized the divinity of Christ by portraying him as a married man and that he also fathered a child.
As the Christian organizations in India protested against the film, it has a delayed release in India on June 2nd. The Chief Minister of Punjab has announced that the film has been banned there.
As this story is a fiction based on some paintings and speculations unlike the intellectual discoveries of Darwin and Galileo, some say that this film is anti-Christian and hence it should be banned. Others are raising their voice by saying that though it is intellectual, it is artistic and hence should not be banned.
Both Sony and Dan Brown are happy that beyond these opposing groups, their idea of producing this story into film is fulfilled.
This film has collected more than Rs.1000 crore already. The novel 'The Da Vinci Code' which has been selling like hot cakes has further increased its sale by 30%. Whether Hollywood had discovered Jesus Christ's progeny or not by releasing the film 'The Da Vinci Code,' they have mastered the art of making money.
