It is more than usual for cinema stars in Tamilnadu to shine in the political arena. Tamil cinema has shaped five Chief Ministers in Tamilnadu. This relationship continues like a never ending story.
This election has a strong accent of cinema domination like never before. The Dravidian parties are ahead in this stars race. In ADMK, S S Chandran has been an MP and Radharavi is an MLA. The other long time party loyalists are Gundu Kalyanam, Dhamu, actresses like Ambika, Radha, C R Saraswati, Vasuki. S Ve.Sekar has already shed his BJP image and identified himself with ADMK.
Actor Pandian who has been a DMK loyalist has become Amma's sympathsier. The long time member of ADMK Vijayakumar has come back to the fold after a long gap. Actors like Senthil and Anandraj, have not only joined the party but have become active speakers. Another celebrity who has joined Amma's party is actor Murali.
Besides, ADMK has gained an activist speaker free. T R of alliteration fame, whose ideal is DMK, has jumped into ADMK propaganda activity. ADMK's gain is his vengeance to defeat DMK.
In DMK, Napoleon has been an MLA and Sarath Kumar has been an MP. Besides, DMK has an army of cinema celebrities: Radhika, ‘Pasi' Sathya, Chandrasekar, Thyagu, Kumarimuthu, Director Rama Narayanan, Producer A L Alagappan. But what is negative is that there are no celebrities coming into the party during elections.
Political parties deploy artistes in the belief that they would bring in the crowd. At the same time, celebrities had asked for seats along with the intention to speak.
S Ve Sekar has chosen Mylapore constituency from where he had already contested. There is a possibility for Senthil to contest from Kadaladi or Mudukalathur. People who have been active speakers for ADMK like Gundu Kalyanam and Dhamu are also hoping to get a chance to contest elections.
From DMK, Napoleon wants to hold on to Villivakam constituency. Chandrasekar may contest from Dindugal or Usilampatti.
Among so many stars, there can be only one moon. This time that moon is Vijayakanth, the leader of DMDK. A recent survey has designated his party as the third largest in Tamilnadu. With that strength, he has been undertaking whirlwind tours. His weakness is that there are no second line leaders and that none of the Dravidian parties have taken notice of him.
Having been in movies for 25 years and a President of Nadigar Sangam, he ought to have received great support from Kodambakkam. Strange, Anandraj who is always featured in his films has joined ADMK and speaks against him. Even Mansoor Ali Khan who became big with his support is in the opposition camp. As the elections are approaching, it is a pity that Kodambakkam has turned away from him.
As in the movies, Karthik's entry into politics has a lot of confusion. He claimed that he will join Forward Block only as a General Secretary, if not, he vowed to start a party. Now he has accepted what was offered and negotiating with Dravidian parties. It is 100% sure that he will contest in the elections.
Will Cheran actively participate in MDMK's activities or won't he? Kodambakkam is betting. As he has appeared in Vaiko's meetings and lent support actively, this expectation is becoming strong. Another great support Vaiko is getting from film fraternity is from producer S Thanu. He is not likely to ask for a MLA seat.
Besides all the above, the point at which every one is looking at is Rajinikanth. Having realized that his voice has its own power, political parties are working to earn his support. Even if he does not actively support them, it will be a great help if he does not join forces with the opposition. The lady superstar Vijayashanthi is just the opposite. She openly supports Amma. She may openly participate in the meetings. She has left BJP and started a new party. Since there is no BJP to control, she may be seen in ADMK's election activities.
As usual there is no dearth of cinema personalities in the election fray. There will be unlimited crowds in the meetings they participate. Is being well-known in cinema and fighting against cinema villains, qualification enough to enter politics?
Is being a celebrity alone a reason to vote for a person or whom he/she supports? Just because someone is a successful lawyer does not make him eligible to perform an open heart surgery. But why vote for an actor and make him an MLA, just because we know him as an actor?
There may not be immediate answers to these questions. But if this election at least poses these questions, we will be saved from cinema fascination. And the country will do better!
