For the Tamil society that values films on emotional content, international films provide a rare opportunity to evaluate the quality, understand the weakness, to refine the language of cinema, and to enhance appreciation capability of directors and audiences.
It is true that the trend to compare the creations with the international films and to refine the cinema language is definitely increasing among the young Tamil directors. Examples that are affected by such movement, is Balaji Sakthivel's 'Kaadal' that came close to realism.
Indo Cine Appreciation has been conducting film festivals continuously this year and their third one, the Chennai International Film Festival started on December 17, 2005. It was inaugurated by Arora, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. From the Tamil film field, Prashant and Sneha participated.
The film screened on the inauguration day was German film 'ROSENSTRASSE' by lady director Margarathe Von Trotta. Its background is about the torture of the Jews under the Nazi regime.
Hundreds of films have been produced on this theme. What is more, every year will witness at least three such films on this theme. The agony of Jews has now been pushed to the background, now that Palestine Muslims are victims of violence and destruction by them. With the complicity of global powers, Israel is unleashing destruction on Palestine Muslims.
At such a time, a film with sympathy towards Jews? These questions were murmured about in the Festival. At the same time, they were happy to watch a film depicting the suffering of the Jews at the hands of Nazis seen through the eyes of a woman director. The highlight of the evening was the talk by the director on her film before the screening.
On the 2nd day (18-12-2005), totally 15 films were screened - 5 films at Anand theatre, 6 films at Little Anand theater and 4 at the Film Chamber.
Instead of 'Karkash' (Hindi - directed by Kamal Sadanah) being screened at Little Anand in the morning, Swedish film 'THE GUY IN THE GRAVE NEXT DOOR' was screened. Directed by Kjell Sundvall, the viewers flocked to see the film. The other films screened yesterday were:
MOTHER KISS - directed by ZOLBAYAR DORJ - Mongolia
PACKING MONKEYS AGAIN- directed by MARIJA DEROVIC - Serbia
STAR - directed by NIKOLAI LEBEDEV - Russia
LOVE STAR - directed by MILAN SPASIC - Serbia
DIASCONTADOS (Running out of time) - directed by IMANOL VRIBE - Spain.
LA DENTELLIERE (The Lace Market) - directed by CLAVDE GORETTA- France
WEED - directed by FATIH AKIN - Germany (Resident in Germany of Turkish origin)
I THINK ABOUT GERMANY: WE FORGOT TO GO BACK - directed by FATIH AKIN
THE HOUSE HOLDER - directed by JAMES IVORY - UK
GOOSE FEATHER - directed by LJUBISA SAMARDZIC - Serbia
LIFE AND TIMES OF HANK GREENBERG - directed by AVIVA KEMPNER- USA
LA PIANISTE - directed by MICHAEL HANEKE - France
JAPANESE STORY - directed by SUE BROOKS - Australia
HEAD ON - directed by FATIH AKIN - Germany
The films directed by Fatih Akin from Germany made the most impact on the viewers.
Tamil directors Balaji Sakthivel and A Venkatesh made it a point to watch the Russian film STAR. Based on a war story, it's an adaptation from a novel. This novel was translated into Tamil as 'Vidivelli' many years back.
Apart from Balaji Sakthivel and A Venkatesh, luminaries from the Tamil film field among those present included Balu Mahendra, Revathy, Ramesh Khanna and lyricist Na Muthukumar.
A total of 102 films would have been screened in the weeklong festival to conclude on Dec 25th. Despite the rains, there were record crowds present to watch the films. This augers well for the future of Tamil cinema.
