If one had seen the beaming faces of those who left Anand theatre after seeing the film on December 19, 2005, one would surely have recognized it as the expression of people who have seen a remarkable film.
Cinema is the dream of millions on celluloid, but it attains fulfillment in few cases. Director BENITO ZAMBRANO’s Spanish film SOLAS is one such film.
A mother, daughter and an aged neighbour… The relationship between the three of them is told sensitively in Solas. The pregnant daughter is ditched by her lover. The mother has to contend with a doubting husband, even in the hospital bed. The old man who cooks and takes care of himself, has only his dog for company. People who have faced only bitterness in their lives, when they seek solace within themselves, it creates a sympathetic wave in the audience. Natural acting without exaggeration and an intelligent screenplay are important reasons for this.
In 2000 at the Angers European Film Festival, SOLAS received the Audience Award, as well as awards at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Another film that won over the audience was Italian director SALVATORE MEREU’s THREE STEP DANCING.
German director AYSE POLAT’s 'TOUR ABROAD' won her the Ankara International Film Festival’s Most Promising Director award. Released in 1998, the film still appeals to audiences, vouching for the brilliance of its director.
At the Berlin International Film Festival in1965, director JAMES IVORY’s SHAKESPEARE WALLAH won the SILVER BERLIN BEAR as well as best actress award for Madhur Jaffrey. James Ivory belongs to UK and the film was screened at the Chennai festival.
Australian director KRIV STENDERS’ 'THE ILLUSTRATED FAMILY DOCTOR,' 'THE JESTER AND THE QUEEN' from the Czech Republic (director VERA CHYTILOVA), director PIERRE YAMEOGO’s 'MOI ET MONT BLANC' (from Burkina Faso), Mongolian director OSOR BAT – ULZII’s 'WORDS FROM THE HEART', Serbian director MILOS MISA RADIVOJEVIC’s 'A WAKENING FROM THE DEAD' were also screened.
Those who enjoyed the Russian film STAR on the second day of the festival, were treated to Russian film 'RUSLAN AND LUDMILA' directed by ALEKSANDR PTUSKO.
