Hollywood is excited. This summer has started with an optimistic note. The first release of summer 'Spiderman 3' has beaten all previous collection records. This feat is outstanding, as the film has not only performed well in US, but in about 105 countries of the world.
Toby McGuire who acts as Spidey (Peter Parker) in 'Spiderman' 2 is the hero of the film. Here too, Spiderman (Peter Parker) hesitates to express his love to Mary Jane. He is not able to present the wedding ring to Mary Jane.
Peter's friend Harry Osborne who believes that Peter was the murderer of his father wants to take revenge on him. In the clash between the two, Harry happens to lose his memory and thus Peter and Harry reunite as friends.
Meanwhile a space insect gets into Peter's body. Spiderman's red attire becomes black. The insect turns Spiderman into a brutal person.
The chief villain of the film is Sandman. He was convicted for the murder of Peter's uncle, but when he escapes from jail and on his way to visit his daughter, he turns into a sandman. He robs banks to treat his daughter.
Eddy Brock, the specialist photographer becomes the villain for Peter Parker who happens to be a photographer. Eddy Brock loses his job owing to Peter Parker.
Planning to take revenge on Peter, Eddy learns that Peter is the Spiderman. As the space insect gets into his body, he becomes Venom, the vicious force, who resembles Spiderman.
In the final scene, when Sandman and Eddy who has transformed into Venom take Mary Jane captive, Spiderman and Harry rescue her. In this clash, Harry sacrifices his life in an effort to save his friend.

If you ignore the magic of graphics, 'Spiderman 3' is just an ordinary man. Harry's assistant clarifies to Harry much later in the film that Spiderman was the murderer of his father, much against his belief. If only he had related this truth earlier, the fight between Peter and Harry, which is carried over from the first part, would have ended much earlier.
When Peter Parker dances in the bar just to provoke his lover, the scenes reminds us of Tamil film heroes. What was such a cruel disease that affected Sandman's daughter that he was compelled to rob the banks in New York City? How did that space insect target Spiderman and get into his body? How did Harry suffering from memory loss suddenly regain his memory and pick up a fight with Spiderman?
One can pick more than a dozen holes in Spiderman 3. That is not important. But what is astonishing is Spiderman 3's collection.
'Spiderman 3' was released in 4252 theatres in the US. This is the first ever Hollywood film that got released in so many theatres.
On the day 'Spiderman 3' was released, the collection in 4252 theatres in America alone was 59 million dollars. (The exact figure is $58,166,256). This is a record. Till then, the film which had the record was 'Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest' released last year. It made 55.8 million dollars on the opening day and now 'Spiderman 3' has broken that record by making 59 million dollars.
'Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest' made 135.6 million dollars in its first week collection. This has also been broken by 'Spiderman 3' that made 152 million dollars.
Apart from America, 'Spiderman 3' is making records in Canada, UK, Brazil, Italy, France, Russia and other countries. In India, 588 prints of the film have been made and this is a record. The film has been dubbed in 5 languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bhojpuri. The film made 6.64 crores on the first day and 19 crores 17 lakhs in the first week. This is more than the 14.94 crores made by James Bond film 'Casino Royale.'
Among the films released this year, Mani Ratnam's 'Guru' is leading with 20.70 crores that it made in the first week. But the returns dwindled in the 2nd and 3rd week. So, 'Spiderman 3' could break the record held by 'Guru' in India.
Now what everyone is looking out for, is whether 'Spiderman 3' will hold the record for total collection on a worldwide scale.
In America, the total box office record is still held by 'Titanic.' Directed by James Cameroon, the film made 600,779,824 dollars in America alone.
'Spiderman 1' is in 7th place. It made 403,706,375 dollars. 'Spiderman 2' is in 10th place with 373,377,893 dollars.
On a global level, 'Titanic' holds the world record with 1,835,300,000 dollars. Second spot goes to 'Star Wars' by George Lucas. 'Spiderman 1' is in 15th place (806,700,000 dollars). 'Spiderman 2' is in 18th spot.
Will the highly successful 'Spiderman 3' come to hold the top spot? Critics think that would be difficult. Through a one day match, South Africa made 400 runs and broke Australia's record. The same thing could happen to 'Spiderman 3.'
Last year, 'Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest' made more box office collection than Spiderman 1 and 2, in America and on a global scale. In America, 'Spiderman 1' hold 7th place in box office collection. But 'Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man's Chest' is in 6th place with a collection of 423,032,628 dollars.
'Spiderman 1' is in 15th place on a global level, but 'Pirates...' is in 3rd place with a collection of 1,129,219,252 dollars.
Even if this is broken by 'Spiderman 3,' the third pirate film 'Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End' is to be released in mid June. It will be released in Tamil as 'Caribbean Kallarai Theevu – Ulagathin Ellayil.' Film critics believe this could easily break the record held by 'Spiderman 3.' The producers Disney have already started their publicity campaign.
Other films to be released include 'Harry Potter 5,' 'Rush Hour 3,' 'Die Hard' and 'Shrek 3.' So the record held by 'Spiderman 3' could well be broken in the near future.
