All arts including cinema is the expression of a society. The Tamil society has a tradition to measure even politics with cinema. The outstanding example is that five Chief Ministers of the State have had cinema background.
Cinema has been affecting the Tamil society since its advent. Their success and failures too affect them. On the basis of the number of movies produced and their business potential one can estimate the level of appreciation and economic level.
Going by them, 2005 was a much better year than the preceding one. The Number of original Tamil films produced in 2005 is 100. This is 12 more than the previous year. The last year saw 21 other language dubbed films. In 2004, it was 41. it may be interpreted to mean a reduction in the people seeking out other language films.
Though showing progress in production, history has never seen the confrontations the Tamil films had with politics and society.
The problems started with the protest by Tamil Padukappu Kazhagam to Tamilise the name of 'Mumbai Xpress'. Agitations continued. Banners were torn. That Kamal was steadfast in not changing the name in spite of troubles may have reduced collections for his film, but it was the moment of honour for Tamil films.
In the same trend S.Suryah's film 'B.F.' (Best Friend) was forced to change its name to 'A.Ah.'
Thankar Bachan got into problems by calling actress as call girls. This went up to making him apologise to the actresses.
Khusboo got entangled into problems by expressing her views on chastity. By lending a helping hand Suhasini demanded to know “if men grew horns” and she has been in and out of the courts.
Postal stamps of the great artistes of the bygone era like M.R.Radha, P.Kannambal, M.S.Subulakshmi were released. This was an honour to Tamil Cinema.
2005 saw Sathyaraj doing the maximum number of films (6). Actresses were Asin and Namita (4 each). Vadivelu scored high (20) in making people laugh.
Even with 100 films release, only 17 films crossed 100 days. Along with this, in all only 37 films made the producers earn profit.
2005 can be termed the year in which Tamil films sweep the neighbouring States of Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra. The Tamil movie 'Chandramuki' beat the original Telugu films in collections in Andhra. 'Gajini' released at the end of year, is still stirring Andhra. 16 Tamil films were dubbed in Telugu in the last year.
2005 again was a very auspicious year for cinema artistes. It saw 10 celebrities giving up their bachelorhood. Prashant married Grihalakshmi. Artiste Mira Vasuden had a love married with Vishal, the son of cameraman Ashok Kumar. Artiste Kaveri wedded Telugu Director Suryakiran and comedy artiste Muthukalai with Malathi. Dance Master Brinda chose the Kerala born Kaju Parameswaran. Yuvan Sahnkar Raja's romanced culminated in marriage during the last year. 2005 saw the wedding of Director Radhakrishnan, play back singer Bavadharini and 'Mahanadhi' Shobana.
Amir's film 'Ram' was chosen for the Indian Panorama. Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan and play back singer Chitra were conferred with 'Padmasri'.
'Thavamai Thavamirundu' released at the end of the year is a landmark in Tamil cinema for its quality and length. Cheran's film was the longest among the films released during the last year.- 5456 metres. The second was Shankar's 'Anniyan'.- 4473 metres.
The Tamil Cinema had to face the loss last year in the death of 'Kaadal Mannan' Gemini Ganesan, the multi-faceted artiste P.Bhanumati and comedy writer A.Veerappan.
The black events of the year were the young artiste Sindhu's death and the unfortunate suicide of just 21 year old Shalini.
Let the year 2006 be better with minimal losses and a memorable experiences.
