The morning show films in Kerala were under control after the Shakila wave came to an end. Tamilians also heaved a big sigh. But that peace may not continue, it seems. Because the films imported from Bollywood are becoming a threat.
A film titled ‘Jism’ was released some years ago starring Bipasha Basu and John Abraham. That film dealing with the wayward ways of a woman created a wave in Hindi cinema. ‘Jism’ helped Bollywood that was experiencing serial flops to make a beginning on a different track. ‘Jism’ came into being primarily depending on the glamour of Bipasha Basu. It was released in Tamil as ‘Deham’.
Mallika Sherawat’s ‘Murder’ made the road paved by ‘Jism’ into a main street. It made Bollywood believe strongly that if there is glamour, money could be made. This film showed Mallika in a swimming costume.
On the one hand Hindi cinema was flying high with films like ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, ‘Road, ’Black’ and ‘Rang De Basanti’ and on the other, many films were made with themes like glamour, lust and illicit love.
As obscene Malayalam films stopped coming to Tamilnadu, that place was taken over by such Bollywood films.
It is a wonder that actors like Isha Khoppikar who acted in Tamil films ‘Kaadhal Kavidai’ and ‘En Svaasa Katre’ and Amoga of ‘J J’ did not hesitate to act in glamour films.
The first ever film ‘Girl Friend’ portraying love between two women starring Isha Khoppikar was released in Tamil with a claim as the first lesbian film of India and created a wave. A dozen or so such films are waiting to arrive from Bollywood to Kollywood. Their titles indicate the themes of those films: ‘8th Night’, ‘Uchakattam’, ‘Singari’ and ‘Chetnavin Iravugal.’
The plots of these films are multiple relationships, betraying the husband, sex worker’s night life and black magic.
‘8th Night’ to be released in Tamil soon features Meghna Naidu. Globally, most natural calamities have taken place on the 8th. That is the theme of ‘8th Night’. Featuring black magic centrally, this film portrays a scene where two of Meghna Naidu’s friends go through a naked worship to redeem a curse. Meghna Naidu’s excessive glamour is a bonus for the film. Raja Tara is the actor who is paired with Meghna Naidu in the film. Karan Ram is the director of this film.
Similar to ‘Girl Friend’, Isha Khoppikar’s new film is ‘Hasina’. The story is about falling in love with two men, but marrying one. The reason for releasing in Tamil is the love scenes of Khoppikar with hero Verma. In Tamil it is titled as ‘Uchakattam’. Preeti Jingani is the director.
‘Chetnavin Iravugal’ starring the glamour heroines of Bollywood, Sonali and Bindu is to be released in Tamil soon. The main story of this film is Chetna’s night life!
Another film that distributors and producers are expecting a lot from is ‘Singari’. World beauty Sushmita Sen has acted in this film. The expectations are high owing to director Kalpana G Lakshmi who had directed ‘Kamasutra’. The story of ‘Singari’ will in no way disappoint those expectations.
Ravpur is a village secluded from the busy city life. This is a village with many sex workers. The main business is prostitution. Basanti is in this business without much passion for it because she has no other way. She continues in this business waiting for the right man to come along, so she could get married to him and give up this business. But that kind of man is rare in Ravpur.
In this context Basanti meets with Kandan Mishra. Kandan Mishra is the embodiment of the man of Basanti’s dreams. Kandan Mishra also falls for Basanti’s beauty. They both decide to get married.
When life is heading towards a happy ending, the arrival of Pavan Punda becomes a big obstacle. This modern landlord has enslaved the village of Ravpur in the name of God. He lusts for Basanti. Punda’s spiritual dominance puts Basanti to bed easily. Basanti tries to escape from him and unite with Kandan Mishra. Does she succeed in her struggle is the climax.
Sushmita Sen is generous with sex as Basanti in the film that reeks of glamour. Anuk Savani acts as Kandan Mishra and Mithun Chakravarthy as Pavan Punda in this film.
There are a dozen or so films like ’Singari’ waiting to be released in Tamil. After the 150 day run of the Hindi film ‘See you at 9’ starring Malavika at a Chennai theatre, the graph for such films are moving upwards.
It is shocking, much less than a wonder how organizations who cry hoarse about culture and chastity and names of the films have not cared to take notice of such poison from Bollywood. These films are more dangerous than the Malayalam morning show films.
The audience for the Malayalam films feels guilty and stealthily goes into the theatre. But the Bollywood films starring frontline heroines Meghna Naidu, Isha Khoppikar and Sushmita Sen do not give a sense of guilt to the audience. They buy tickets like any ordinary film goer.
This state of mind is dangerous as it has completely removed any sense of guilt. Who is to put an end to this? This is the big question facing the Tamil cultural world!
