While Kerala beauties have invaded Tamilnadu and turned into dream girls for the Tamil youth, 'Poi' Vimala Raman is a Tamil girl who is wowing Kerala audiences with her wonderful acting. She has shortened her name to just Vimala now.
Though her parents hail from the south, they migrated to Australia 30 years ago. Vimala was born and brought up at Sydney. She is trained in information technology. She started learning Bharatanatyam at age 5 and is a fully trained dancer.
In 2004, she won the Miss India Australia title. She made her debut in films through 'Poi.' Since it was a Balachander film, Vimala is proud and happy and popular in Kerala films too.
Have you forgotten Tamil films?
She brushed the hair falling across her face and started to speak.
"Not at all. Before I got an offer from a Tamil film, I got a Malayalam film offer. I thought I would do that film and come back, but lady luck was smiling on me, so I got 3 more film offers and made use of it.
I acted with Suresh Gopi in 'Time' directed by Shaji Kailash. I act as a flower seller. The film is running very well. Wherever I go in Kerala now, I get flying kisses from my fans. I am acting next in 'Pranaya Kaalam' directed by Uday Anand. It will be released in the first week of June. I have acted as heroine to Jayaram in 'Suryan' and am also going to act with Mohanlal in a film.
I am getting offers in Tamil and Telugu. Discussions are on.
Your dream role?
I want to act as a devadasi in grand settings. I also love a role like Cleopatra. When I was small, I have dressed up as Cleopatra in fancy dress. If I get a role like that in films, I'm sure I will do a great job of it.
In films, one cannot sustain for long if there's no glamour...
We add salt to food for taste. The salt itself does not become the food. This is my explanation for glamour too. Cinema itself is glamour!
